Wolverine girls drop conference opener to Remsen St. Mary’s
South O’Brien played its first War Eagle Conference game of the season December 7 at Paullina as Remsen St. Mary’s came to call. The Hawks set the tone early, besting the home team 14-3 in the first quarter of what became a 61-34 St. Mary’s win.
The Wolverines shot 27 percent for the game, making 12 of their 44 field goal tries. Included in that was 3-of-21 shooting from three-point range. South O’Brien attempted 10 free throws, making seven. St. Mary’s was just under 50 percent from the floor with 26 makes in 53 attempts. The Hawks launched 18 three-pointers with four finding the mark. The visitors were 5-of-11 at the foul line.
Scoring for the Wolverines showed Willa Sickelka and Taja Conley with eight points apiece, Alyssa Van Beek with seven, Abby Schreck with six, Takara Conley and Samantha Wilbur with two apiece and Marissa Ebel with one. Sickelka and Taja Conley each dished for two assists.
Sickelka made two steals and was the rebound leader with seven. Van Beek came down with another five boards. South O’Brien had 24 turnovers in the game.
