West Sioux defeats Wolverine girls in overtime
South O’Brien and West Sioux were unable to decide matters in regulation when the two teams met in non-conference action December 3 at Hawarden. The Falcons managed to tie the game late in the fourth quarter and then never trailed in overtime as they emerged with a 43-41 win.
The teams were tied at 32-all before Willa Sickelka made a steal and went the length of the floor to lay the ball in and draw a foul. Her free throw gave the Wolverines a 35-32 lead with 1:39 left in regulation. At the :29 mark Mia Danielson got inside to score two of her team-high 20 points and pull West Sioux within one. She was fouled on the play and sank the free throw, tying the game again. In the extra session, the Falcons moved out to a 40-36 advantage. Riley Draper’s basket pulled the Wolverines within two but West Sioux pushed the lead to five at 43-38. Sickelka’s three-pointer with two seconds left accounted for the final two-point margin.
Sickelka led South O’Brien with 20 points, eight steals, six rebounds and three assists. The Wolverines got seven points from Kenna Bauer, five from both Draper and Alyssa Van Beek and two each from Abby Schreck and Takara Conley.
Bauer contributed six rebounds and three steals. Van Beek added four rebounds and two steals and Schreck three rebounds and two assists. The 29 South O’Brien rebounds also included five from Draper and three from Samantha Wilbur. The Falcons pulled down 39 rebounds. Each team committed 21 turnovers.
The Wolverines were 15-of-42 from the floor for 36 percent. They were 4-of-16 from beyond the arc and 7-of-14 at the foul line. West Sioux connected on 16 of 58 field goal attempts for 28 percent. That included 2-of-15 from three-point range. The Falcons sank nine of their 12 charity tosses.
