Late surge lifts Wolverine boys past West Sioux

In a game with plenty of ebbs and flows, South O’Brien took a late lead and held on for a 59-54 non-conference win over West Sioux December 3 at Hawarden. Hudson Oolman hit the go-ahead basket with 2:16 remaining to make the score 54-53 and the Wolverines held a lead the rest of the way.
South O’Brien jumped out to a 22-8 lead after one quarter. The Falcons won the second quarter and trailed 30-22 at halftime. A 24-point third quarter gave West Sioux a 46-45 heading into the final frame.
Oolman, with 17 points, was one of three Wolverines to score in double figures. Jake Wallin led the team with 20 points and Sawyer Honkomp added another 14. Rounding out the scoring were Jacob Van Lith with six points and David Bottjen with two. Wallin notched three assists and Oolman two.
The 25 South O’Brien rebounds included 11 from Wallin and four each from Oolman and Van Lith. Oolman made three steals and Wallin blocked a shot. West Sioux was guilty of 13 turnovers while the Wolverines turned the ball over just six times.
South O’Brien outscored the Falcons by 10 points at the free throw line. The Wolverines sank 19 of their 30 charity tosses while West Sioux was 9-of-15 at the line. South O’Brien shot 41 percent from the floor (19-of-46) compared to the Falcons’ 47 percent (20-of-43). West Sioux hit five of 17 three-point attempts with the Wolverines going 2-of-12 from beyond the arc.
