Alta-Aurelia spoils hoop open for Wolverine girls
South O’Brien tipped off the basketball season by hosting Alta-Aurelia November 23 at Paullina. The Wolverines failed to reach double digits in scoring in the first quarter and again in the third and dropped the opener a 46-36.
A trio of South O’Brien players tied for team scoring honors. Abby Schreck, Alyssa VanBeek and Kenna Bauer each tallied nine points. Taja Conley was close behind with eight.
The other point came from Willa Sickelka. Her night also included seven rebounds, eight steals and two blocked shots. Bauer grabbed six rebounds and VanBeek pulled down four. Riley Draper was the assists leader with four.
The visitors from the Twin Lakes Conference got 14 points from Lucy Gunkelman and 12 from Brielle Engelman.
From the floor the Wolverines were 13-of-45 for 29 percent. Alta-Aurelia shot 38 percent with 15 baskets in 40 attempts. The Warriors tried only one shot from three-point range and it was unsuccessful. South O’Brien hoisted 13 treys with only three hitting the mark.
The Wolverines also struggled at the free throw line where they were 7-of-20 for 35 percent. Alta-Aurelia shot 62 percent at the stripe with 16 makes in 26 attempts.
