Wolverine Football team opens with home win over Sioux Central
By Coach Mark Fuhrman
The 2021 edition of the South O’Brien Football team picked up a nice win Friday, August 27. The first game of 2021 was a home game against the Sioux Central Rebels. The temperature and humidity were a bit extreme but a good solid team effort rose to the occasion and won 14-8.
The Rebels received the opening kickoff. After three runs into the Wolverine defense they were forced to punt. The Wolverines’ Jake Wallin forced the punter to take off running and he was tackled quickly giving the Wolverine offense great field position.
The drive took 12 plays and covered 35 yards. Eddie Millan finished the drive with an 8 yard run with 8:55 left in the first quarter. Kaedon Louscher kicked the extra point and the Wolverines were up 7-0.
Sioux Central put a drive together but came up short at the 4 yard line. They turned the ball over on downs. The Wolverine defense had knocked down several pass attempts and the defensive line was in control of the line of scrimmage.
After stopping another series by the Rebels, the Wolverines took over after a punt in the end zone. The Wolverine offense picked up a couple first downs and were able to put another score on the board. With 4:23 to go in the second quarter, Jacob VanLith threw a 33 yard pass to Sawyer Honkomp. The free safety tipped it up but Sawyer was able to maintain his concentration and make the catch. Kaedon Louscher kicked the extra point and put the Wolverines up 14-0.
The Rebels put another drive together but came up short on downs again. This time at the 9 yard line as time was running out in the first half.
The second half remained pretty evenly matched. The Wolverines did put a drive together but at the 4 yard line bounced all the way back to the 12 yard line and forced a fourth and long situation, instead of first and goal.
The Rebels continued to fight and connected on a long pass play in the ensuing drive. This put them in position to score with 36 seconds to go in the game. They made the 2 point conversion and this put the score at 14-8. The onside kick attempt failed and the Wolverines were able to run the clock out.
Jacob VanLith was 3-for-4 passing with 52 yards and a touchdown. Parker Struve led the team with 10 carries for 71 yards. Eddie Millan had 7 carries for 25 yards and a touchdown. He also had 6 tackles on defense. Pete Botjen led the team with 8 tackles and 1 TFL.
Before the next game at Sheldon we need to eliminate some penalties and clean up some errors offensively.
