South O’Brien Girls Upset Class 3A #10 Sioux Center
By Coach Heather Struve
The South O’Brien Softball team came away with a 2-0 win over a very successful Sioux Center team on Friday, June 19th at Swanson Sports Complex! This was a super defensive effort by the Wolverines, as they played a clean seven innings! Grace Fuhrman was just as impressive in the center circle. She allowed just three hits, no runs, walked two and struck out three. The impressive part was that she coaxed 10 fly outs out of the Warrior hitters.
The Wolverines struck early with a run as Hannah Dau set the tone with a single, stole second, was sacrificed to third on a Willa Sickelka bunt, and scored on a ground out by Abby Schreck. The scoreboard was quiet until the bottom of the fifth when Jinger Nieuwenhuis singled and was replaced by pinch runner Karlee Warnke. Warnke stole second, made it to third on a ground out by Maddie Johnson and scored on a grounder from Kenna Bauer.
This was a very fun, intense game for both teams! There were not many baserunners for either team. South O’Brien left three on base and Sioux Center left four on base.
Schreck and Dau each had two singles, Schreck had an RBI and Dau scored a run. Nieuwenhuis and Maddie Johnson each had a base hit. The Wolverines improved their overall record this week to 10-5 and their conference record to 5-3.
