Sioux Central Comes Back to Take Win from South O’Brien

By Coach Heather Struve
In the opening game of the Wolverine Softball Tournament played June 13 at Paullina South O’Brien was down 5-0 after the first half inning of play against Sioux Central, but would claw back with four runs in the bottom of the first and two more runs in the second to take a 6-5 lead. The Rebels scored one run in the third to make the score 6-6, but South O’Brien came back with two of their own runs to go ahead 8-6. Neither team scored in the fourth inning. With two outs and runners on second and third for the Rebels in the fifth, the floodgates opened and they went on to score six runs to put them up 12-8, which would end up being the final score of the game. The time limit halted the game after five innings.
This was a very frustrating game, as the Wolverines committed seven fielding errors. We need to have more consistency in the field. We are making some silly mistakes and maybe sometimes are letting one mistake lead to another mistake and things just snowball.
Willa Sickelka had a perfect game at the plate going 3-for-3. She also recorded three RBI’s and scored a run. Kenna Bauer hit a three-run triple and scored a run. Hannah Dau, Abby Schreck, Maddie Johnson and Alyssa Van Beek all had singles in the loss. Grace Fuhrman had to take the loss on the mound. She gave up eight hits, 12 runs (one earned), walked one and struck out three. Bauer pitched the last 1/3 inning of play, giving up 1 hit and walking 1.
