Wolverines unable to sustain fast start, lose to Sheldon

South O’Brien got off to the start it wanted with three runs in the top of the first inning against Sheldon. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, only once were they able to change the scoreboard the rest of the way. Meanwhile, the Orabs finally got on the board in the fourth inning and added on in the fifth and sixth to claim a 9-4 interconference win June 3 at Sheldon.
After their Siouxland Conference hosts had scored twice in the fourth to draw within a run, the visitors tallied in the fifth to increase their edge to 4-2. The Orabs picked up four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead at 6-4. They tacked on three more runs in the sixth to fortify their advantage.
Pete Bottjen led off the game with a base hit and stole second. With one out, Jett Keith singled home Bottjen. Keith not only swiped second base but also third. He scored when Dain Moermond came through with a base hit. Courtesy runner Cole Tjossem also took liberties on the basepaths and stole second. After Tjossem went to third on a wild pitch, Kadyn Steffens delivered an RBI single.
South O’Brien was able to mount a two-out rally to add its run in the fifth. Keith kept the inning alive with a single. A balk call sent him to second. Moermond followed with a base hit moving Keith to third. Brock Riedemann hit a ball that was misplayed by the second baseman and Keith was able to score.
Starting pitcher Tyson Wulf went 4-2/3 innings. He yielded six runs (three earned) on seven hits. Wulf struck out two batters, walked two and hit one. Reliever Kester Grimm entered the game to get the final out of the fifth inning. In the sixth he surrendered three earned runs. He fanned two but gave up two hits, walked two and hit a batter. There were three Wolverine errors in the game.
