Wolverines score early and often to beat Harris-Lake Park in opener
South O’Brien scored in each of the first four innings to down Harris-Lake Park 15-5 May 24 at the Swanson Sports Complex in Paullina. The game was the first of the season for each of the teams.
The Wolverines scored two runs in the first inning and added four more in the second. After HLP put a couple of runs on the board in the third, South O’Brien came back with a seven-spot in the bottom of the frame. Each team scored twice in the fourth and the Wolves attached their final run in the fifth.
Jinger Nieuwenhuis went 3-4 at the plate with two doubles and three runs batted in. Grace Fuhrman was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Willa Sickelka went 2-for-3 and scored three runs. Annika Jenness homered and drove in a pair of runs. Abby Schreck doubled, plated in a run and scored three runs. Kaylee Jacobs singled, drove in a run and scored a run. Kenna Bauer went 1-for-2 and scored a run. Getting into the scoring act were courtesy runner Karlee Warnke with two runs and pinch runner Payton Farquhar with one. South O’Brien stole six bases without being caught.
The winning pitcher was Fuhrman who went four innings. She yielded four runs on five hits, struck out six batters and walked five. Three of the runs were earned. Kenna Bauer tossed one inning of relief. She allowed an earned run and one hit while fanning three batters and walking two. The pitchers got solid defensive support with only one Wolverine error committed.
