Second place finish advances Wolverine girls in Regional golf
Playing on the home course, South O’Brien’s girls took advantage. The Wolverines will continue on after completion of play in the Class 1A Region 1A Golf Tournament held May 17 at Primghar Golf & Country Club.
Central Lyon took first in the 18-hole Regional Tournament with a score of 388. South O’Brien’s 422 was good for second. MMCRU will also advance as the third place team with a 457. The third-place team advances when the home school places first or second. The Regional Final was scheduled for Monday, May 24 at Holstein.
Senior Kaeley Einck led the Wolverines with a 95 (49/46), which was a personal best for her this season. She placed second overall. “Kaeley is really playing some great golf at the right time,” said Wolverine coach Kris Faust. Tatum Jensen of Central Lyon fired the low round of 87. Other individuals advancing are Isabelle Schneidermann (round of 96), Mariah Gerleman (100), Cameryn Van Holland (105) and Amelia Schneidermann (106), all of Central Lyon, and Zella Ingham (106) of Harris-Lake Park.
For South O’Brien, senior Breana Bottjen and sophomore Whitney Einck tied for eighth place, carding 107s. Said Faust, “Keeping their scores in the 50s on the front and back really helped our team score.” Sophomore Sam Wilbur was 17th with a 113. Although she struggled on the front with a 60, Wilbur showed some resilience when she stuck a 53 on the back nine. Faust commented, “Sam is always eager to work on her game, and it shows.”
Seniors Einck and Bottjen earned Academic All-State Honors from the Iowa Girls’ Coaches Association this season. The honor recognizes senior student-athletes who have a cumulative GPA of 3.85 or higher. Kaeley is a 4-year letterwinner and serves as captain. Said Faust, “She has really peaked in post-season play.” The coach commented on Bottjen by saying, “Breana is a first-year member of the team, but she proves herself meet after meet. She has earned several medals while helping the Wolverines win several conference duals during the regular season. At the beginning of the season, Breana debated about going out—I’m sure glad she decided to play. She has been a real asset to our team.”
