Qualifying Meet sees Wolverine boys send one event on to State
South O’Brien’s shuttle hurdle relay boys have punched their ticket to Des Moines. They accomplished that by winning the event at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet held May 13 at Lawton. Teaming up to come in first were Grant Wagner, Boston Riedemann, Pete Bottjen and Micah Davis. They are scheduled to compete Thursday afternoon at the State Track and Field Meet which runs May 20-22 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
In Class 1A, the top place winner in each event, plus the next 14 best performances statewide from qualifying meet 1st-8th place winners advance to the state meet. None of the other South O’Brien events from Lawton met that criteria.
In the high jump, Willie Conley and Jacob Van Lith tied for second as each cleared the bar at 5’ 8”. Bottjen was third in the 110 meter hurdles where Wagner placed fifth. The second highest placing relay for the Wolverines was the distance medley, made up of Aidan Rehder, Mason Warnke, Hudson Oolman and VanLith. That group finished third.
The long jump saw Oolman place fifth and Riedemann ninth. In the 100 meter dash Cole Tjossem was sixth and Parker Struve eighth. Shot put results showed Keaton Sampson in sixth and Jake Wallin in 10th, while in the discus, Davis was seventh and Jarome Jackson 11th.
Back on the track, Conley placed seventh in the 400 meter dash and Dante Johnson was eighth. The 200 meter dash saw an eighth-place finish for Rehder and a ninth place result for Oolman. Placing fifth in the 4×100 were Tjossem, Freddy Stevens, Struve and Warnke. The 4×800 group of Ben Woodall, Austin McKinny, Camden Stevens and Sam Daniels finished sixth. In seventh was the 4×400 unit of VanLith, Rehder, Struve and Oolman.
The Wolverines were sixth in the team results with 64.66 points. Finishing on top was Gehlen Catholic with 141 points.
