Grace Fuhrman was one of the two FFA members from South O’ Brien who participated in the State Agriscience Fair this year. Her project was entitled Outlook of Genetically Modified and Conventional Seed. For her project, Grace created surveys asking farmers all about what they plant and why. “ It was a really fun experience! I enjoyed talking to farmers about their crops and learning what most farmers in our area plant,” she said. Grace traveled to Ankeny for the contest and she is glad it was in-person. She got first in her division and earned first in the Social Systems category. This enables her to apply for the National Agriscience Fair in the fall.
Ben Woodall also entered a project in the State Agriscience Fair, which he called Growing Strong. For his project, he found out how much moisture is needed for a soybean to emerge. The event itself was a learning experience, not just the project. “I got to see some other projects in my category and they were very interesting including things about how anhydrous ammonia affects earthworms and if they still make holes in the soil,” he said. Ben got third place in his category.
