Maddie Johnson will be returning to state. The talented South O’Brien shot put thrower has again qualified for the big stage with her performance at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet held May 11 at Armstrong.
Johnson finished fourth at the qualifying meet – where first-place finishers automatically move on to this week’s State Track & Field Meet in Des Moines – but her throw of 35’ 5-3/4” was enough to place her among the 24 competitors at state. She is scheduled to throw on Thursday, May 18 at 9:00 a.m.
The Wolverines placed in other events at Armstrong but the times and distances did not meet this year’s standards for state qualification. Coming in third were the distance medley relay group of Karlee Warnke, Camryn Strubbe, Avery Halverson and Takara Conley. Taja Conley finished fourth in the 400 meter hurdles and was part of three relays which also placed fourth. She joined Karlee Warnke, Kelsee Warnke and Strubbe on both the 4×100 and sprint medley relays and teamed with Karlee Warnke, Strubbe and Halverson for the 4×200.
Takara Conley finished seventh in the 800 meters and eighth in the 1500. Other individuals placing seventh were Maddy Friedrichsen in the long jump and Marissa Ebel in the 100 meter hurdles. The quartet of Taylor Wulf, Reese Farquhar, Elodie Wilson and Tawni Wulf made up the seventh-place 4×800 relay.
South O’Brien totaled 40 points to finish eighth out of the 14 teams competing at Armstrong. Alta-Aurelia was the meet champion with 119 points.
