Low scores abound as Gehlen boys best Wolverine golfers
The South O’Brien boys golf team posted a season-best team score as they faced a tough Gehlen team at Primghar on Monday, April 24. Gehlen trumped the Wolverines by finishing with a season-best as well, winning the War Eagle Conference dual 164-170.
The weather was perfect for posting great scores, and the Wolverines did not disappoint. Four South O’Brien golfers hit or tied their personal bests. However, the Jays took the top three medals. Dawson Barthole shot a 37, Landen Rueter and Gabe Wiltgen both shot 40s. Wiltgen took the runner-up medal after a handicap hole playoff. Sophomore Derek Paulsen led the Wolverines with a personal best 41 to take the 4th place medal.
Wolverine coach Kris Faust said, “It was such an awesome night for the South O’Brien guys. I was thrilled to see them play some of their best golf tonight. It was just a bummer that Gehlen posted some of their best scores as well.”
South O’Brien junior David Bottjen tied his personal best 42 for 5th place and continues to be very consistent. Senior Dylan Strubbe posted a personal best 43 for 6th place. Said Faust, “Dylan used his putter only 12 times tonight. His short game was incredible!” Sophomore Carter Halverson also posted a personal best 44 on the night. Senior Keaton Sampson showed his consistency by hitting a 49, which is the 4th meet in a row he has posted a score in the 40s.
“When cards come in at 37, 40, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44. 45, 46, you know it’s been a competitive battle out on the course,” stated Faust. “We didn’t come out on top, but we are definitely moving in the right direction for the conference meet and post-season play.”
