Zion St. John Students Celebrate Earth Day

Saturday, April 22, 2023 has been set aside to respect the planet. It is officially “Earth Day.” The day’s purpose is to raise awareness and advocate for change around the issues most impacting our planet and celebrate the beauty of “Mother Earth.”
On Wednesday April 19 from 12:30 – 3:00, nineteen Zion St. John students in grades 3 – 6, with six adults heeded the call. Groups of 3 students with 1 adult took a 1-mile section of ditch on L48 from Paullina south 4 miles. Both sides of the blacktop got attention. The trash was collected.
Zion St. John 3rd/4th grade teacher, Terry Paulsen said, “We had a great bonding experience. We learned that working together with friends is rewarding and fun and can accomplish more when working together.”
The educational components for school students in this project were to teach kids to respect and be responsible. It was also a lesson in service to others; taking ownership in where we live according to Paulsen.
The students’ message to others is to not throw out trash and to be responsible to take care of God’s beautiful world.
The cans collected in this fun endeavor of service and betterment will be donated to South O’Brien Music Boosters.
