Offense sharp as Wolverine boys beat HMS
A well-executed offensive attack by South O’Brien was able to overcome the one-two punch of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s Kooper Ebel and Lance Berends. The result was a 69-61 Wolverine victory January 17 at Hartley.
“I thought we played very well on the offensive end all night long,” said South O’Brien head coach Kiley Yates. “We had great ball movement and hit open shots including ten threes. David Bottjen and Willie Conley had great scoring games to lead us.”
Bottjen drained five three-point shots and finished with 22 points. Conley, who did most of his work inside the arc, went one better, scoring 23 points.
Boston Riedemann’s eight-point total included a pair of treys. Ben Woodall and Derek Paulsen each finished with three points, courtesy of the long ball. Conley also hit a deep shot. Rounding out the scoring were Hudson Oolman with six points and Sawyer Honkomp and Dain Moermond each with two.
The Wolverines recorded 24 baskets in 52 attempts to shoot 46 percent. Assists led to 19 of those hoops. The assists column showed Honkomp with six, Riedemann with four, Conley with three, Woodall and Paulsen with two each and Oolman and Bottjen with one apiece.
HMS was 19-of-59 from the field for 32 percent with three treys in 20 attempts. From the free throw line South O’Brien was 11-of-21 and the Hawks 20-of-29.
Berends finished with 29 points and Ebel with 21. “Defensively, HMS is a huge challenge to defend Ebel and Berends and they scored 50 of their 61,” said Yates. “We were able to limit the others for the most part and score enough to win the game. It is very difficult to defensive rebound the ball versus such outstanding athletes.”
On the boards, Oolman grabbed seven rebounds while Riedemann, Woodall and Conley collected five apiece. Riedemann, Woodall and Moermond each blocked a shot. Conley made five steals and Riedemann two. HMS committed 14 turnovers compared to 11 for the Wolverines.
