Wolverine girls drop conference opener to Remsen St. Mary’s
South O’Brien played its first War Eagle Conference game of the season December 6 as the Wolverines visited Remsen St. Mary’s at Remsen. Although trailing by 27 points at halftime, the visitors kept battling until the final buzzer showed a 63-41 win for the Hawks.
Wolverine head coach Erica Zimmer saw some good things from her team. “At times, I thought the girls moved the ball well,” said Zimmer. “We took shots that were open and didn’t force many. We had a great night rebounding both offensively and defensively.”
Taja Conley led South O’Brien with 19 points. She drained half of her 10 three-point attempts and added two more baskets. Alyssa Van Beek and Tatiana Conley worked the inside for six points apiece. Takara Conley hit a trey to finish with three points. Abby Nelson, Regan Draper and Samantha Wilbur each tallied two points and Marissa Ebel one. The good ball movement resulted in nine assists with Takara Conley’s four leading the way.
The Wolverines were 16-of-46 from the field for 35 percent. They went to the free throw line nine times, making three. St. Mary’s made 26 of its 60 shot attempts for 43 percent. They were 6-of-22 from distance and converted five of 10 free throws.
The teams were dead-even in rebounding with 32 boards each. Van Beek grabbed 10 rebounds, five on the offensive end. Wilbur and Tatiana Conley each collected five caroms while Ebel and Draper had four apiece. Takara Conley came away with three steals and Taja Conley recorded two thefts. The Hawks turned the ball over 15 times while South O’Brien was guilty of 28 turnovers.
