Flamingo Fundraiser Successful

The General N.B. Baker Library Board of Trustees approved of a fundraiser for the library that involved everyone in the community. The flocking of the plastic or metal pink birds began in early September. Library Director Nancy Hill and a few of her board members made a list of acceptable yards for the flocks. The list came from current and former library board members, council members and mayors. The resident at a flocking lot could choose where to send the flock next. Most gave a donation to move the birds to the named destination.
There were two flocks of 15 birds each. Each flock, except during rain events, even light rain, went to two flocking lots each day. And that took up most of the destinations for the flamingos for their nearly month-long venture.
The project started as a fun way to involve the community to raise funds for a special project. The building was constructed as a school 100 years ago. A wooden flagpole sits on top. The paint on the flagpole has been weathered away. As the library prepares for the 100 anniversary of the building being a library, restoration of that flagpole became a priority. The cost to have the pole removed, restored and returned was $2500. Metal lettering to finish the front yard name and address sign also needs to be paid for and was part of the original goal.
The flock of flamingos was so successful enough money was raised to pay for both projects and also purchase 6 sunlight filtering blinds to protect the collection from discolored book pages.
Donations are still trickling in. Donations to any of these improvements can be made by sending a check or money order to General N. B. Baker Library, 315 Ash Street, Sutherland, Iowa 51058 or taking the check, clearly identifying the purpose of the funds, to city hall.
The Sutherland Library Board of Trustees wants to express their deep gratitude to all who participated in the fun in any way. Your support and generosity is very appreciated and will keep the library an attractive place.
