From a volunteer’s perspective…. Wonderland Theater to highlight 20 t h Anniversary with new improvements – This “movie season” marks the 20, h year that the Wonderland Theatre in Paullina has been managed and operated by volunteers. Even though I have been a volunteer for 19 of those 20 years, I still look forward to each new “round of movies” and I don’t think I’ll ever tire of that wonderful theater popcorn. I also believe volunteerism is one key to a small town’s survival and that we should all try to do our part in making a difference. Many volunteers have come and g$ne over the past two decades — several seasoned veterans return every year and a few have been involved since the beginning. Whether a volunteer is an old-timer or a new recruit, I think the mission is the same – to preserve one of Paullina’s historic traditions while providing hometown family entertainment at affordable prices. Wonderland’s admission prices haven’t changed – they are still the same as in 1982. The cost is $2.50 for adults and $1.50 for children under 12 years of age. Concession prices continue to be reasonably priced as well. An adult can go to the movie and enjoy a medium box of buttered popcorn, a medium soda pop and a candy bar – all for $5. Admission, alone, at a “big-city” movie theater would cost at least $6 to $8. Because of overwhelming support from the people of Paullina and the surrounding area, the Board of Directors is pleased to announce that several improvements will be implemented at Wonderland Theatre within the coming weeks. Those improvements will include: • Upgrading to a digital sound system that will be comparable to most big-city theaters. The sound quality will be improved. The sound will actually come on a compact disc (CD) which is specially synchronized with the film as it runs through the projector. • Installing a newer platter, which is part of the projection system. Parts are no longer being produced for the existing platter. • Installing a film cleaner – a device that cleans the film before it goes through the projector. It will keep the projector cleaner and in better working operation – it will likely improve the picture quality as well.

November 24 – SOS board elections set – One of the first items on the agenda following a successful reorganization vote is to set a date for the election of the new school district’s board of education. The Paullina, Sutherland, and Primghar school boards at a joint meeting, held in Sutherland Monday night, discussed the procedure for such an election. In the case of South O’Brien, seven board members will be elected by a vote of all electors in the newly reorganized district. Six of the directors will represent specific districts and one will be elected at large. The election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 24. Nomination papers must be turned in to the board secretary of the candidate’s present school district by 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 26.
