A Card From The Past

To: O’Brien Co. Bell Staff
Greetings, from Cerulean, KY. Near Fort Campbell.
My husband, Phill Manley, was born in Primghar & grew up a farm boy in O’Brien Co.
In 1970 (at graduation) his draft lottery (birth date) number was drawn #68, so he knew he’d be drafted to go to VN. Phill decided he wanted to go into computer maintenance in the A.F.
Phill’s mom, Delores, gave him this post card, so he’d remember where his home was & where he could find his family. Delores was a hoot & a really wonderful person. She taught her three sons how to do laundry, how to sew on a button & basic cooking. I told her how advanced her thinking was for the 50s, 60s, & 70s. I asked why did she think about doing this for them. Delores said her boys might never marry & the woman they’d marry might not know how to do these things. She had great forethought.
Our sons don’t have much connection to Primghar & you might like this for your archive.
Times sure change! There used to be 10-15 Manley families in O’Brien Co. & now…3? The same has happened to my family in Howard Co.
Take care!
Sincerely,
Phill & Kathy
Editor’s Note: The postcard and this letter will be donated to the Primghar Library or O’Brien County Historical Society.
