Service Expansion at Bob & Scott’s Primghar

The idea of a liquor store at Bob & Scott’s, the grocery store in Primghar, began in January. Some calculations made the concept viable. John Crowhurst, owner, began construction by mid-February. Unused freezer space and one of those spots that simply serves as a catch all was a fairly easy location to add accessible retail space to the store. JV Drywall of Hospers oversaw the construction project.
The area behind the dairy cooler next to the bread rack is now 36 feet of shelving with a 4 foot cooler for liquor, wine and beer selections. Bob & Scott’s is now licensed by the State of Iowa to sell beer, wine and liquor to both retail and wholesale customers.
The liquor license application was much the same as it had always been except to sell at wholesale, they had to also get a federal license with more detailed business and background information. That permit was granted March 28. The state approved April 11.
Crowhurst said, “We’re adding liquor, wine and expanding our beer selection.” He went on to emphasize, “our prices are competitive with area liquor stores.”
Crowhurst gave the example of a quick trip to get a bottle of a household liquor staple but having to go out of town to get it. He sees that customer as grabbing a few snacks and groceries while getting the bottle of wine. He said, “I’m just trying to recoup any sales that are leaving town.”
