O’Brien County Features Expanded Camping
Friday April 15 was opening day for the four campgrounds in O’Brien County. The option to stay in a camper or in a tent while visiting family could have been a great holiday option. The weather had other ideas, however. This camping season introduced a longer camping season in O’Brien County. The season began Friday April 15 with the campgrounds open until Monday October 31.
The 12-person cabins and the bins opened on April 1. The rest of the cabins will open on May 1. Be warned, they’re booked through the season.
Kim Remillard, Douma Park hostess set up on Friday. She is there to assist campers however they need. Starting day for all campground hosts is April 29. They will be on duty until at least October 3 per the contract. Earlier and later is at the hosts’ option.
Bring your own water for at least a couple more weeks. The persistent freezing temperatures cause O’Brien County Conservation Director Travis Scott to keep the water off until temperatures stabilize above freezing. Scott predicts that will be in the next two weeks. He gives hope that spring is coming! The electricity is on at all parks.
Douma Park on opening night had its host on-duty. Three campers were set up and two tents staked down ready for at least the night. About a dozen commited Douma Park guests volunteered numerous hours to ready the campsites, playground area, restrooms and beach area through the week getting ready for opening night.
Internet and cable at Mill Creek Park will be available during the week of April 25. Internet is available at Douma, but the router seemed to be having trouble on opening day. Hot spots would be needed for internet or streaming television at Tjossem or Dog Creek Parks.
Some sites within the parks will be roped off for dirt work and to get grass started. This will take place over the next 2 months. If that schedule holds up the site upgrades will be done by mid-June. Scott explained his plan at the Wednesday August 13 regular board meeting and asked for patience.
A night of camping at Tjossem Park near Primghar is $12. There are 4 pads at Tjossem. Douma Park near Sanborn or Dog Creek Park near Sutherland costs $15 per night. Douma boasts 13 camping pads. Dog Creek has two campgrounds, north and south. The north campground has two cabins and 30 pads. The south campground, way up on the hill has two grain bin cabins and no camping pads, but has primitive campsites.
A night a Mill Creek Park is $20. It features two 12-person cabins and two 6-person cabins. It also has 48 pads for campers or tents with all utilities.
Pack your gear and head to one of O’Brien County’s parks. Pick a spot, register and pay for your spot then set up and enjoy.
