Wolverines can’t get hits to fall in, lose to Sheldon
By Coach Heather Struve
Wednesday June 3 the South O’Brien Softball team traveled to Sheldon. The Wolverines started out great with some big defensive plays by Hannah Dau and Kaylee Jacobs at short and third and a thrown out baserunner trying to steal by catcher Abby Schreck.
The Wolverines got on the scoreboard first when Dau lead off the second inning with a single. She was sacrificed over to second by Jacobs. Jinger Nieuwenhuis then hit a single to score Dau. Those two hits would end up being the only South O’Brien hits of the night.
Orab pitcher Kortney Dekker struck out eight Wolverine batters on the night. She threw with a lot of velocity and we just weren’t getting around on her quick enough. The Orabs had a huge third inning, scoring six runs off of three hits and five Wolverine errors. They scored another run in the fifth and four in the sixth to end the game early by the 10 run rule 11-1.
This was a very frustrating night for us, as we committed an uncharacteristic seven errors in the field. We just couldn’t make even the routine plays for some reason and things snowballed quickly. Kenna Bauer took the loss on the mound. She threw the first three innings and gave up six hits and six unearned runs, but didn’t walk or strike out any batters. Grace Fuhrman came in for the next two innings and gave up one hit, two runs (one ER), walked four and struck out one. Brooklyn Edwards pitched the final 1/3 inning and gave up two hits, three runs (two ER), and walked one. Nieuwnehuis and Dau had the only hits of the night. Dau scored the run and Nieuwenhuis got the RBI.
