Defense not enough for Wolverine girls to pull off tourney win over HLP

South O’Brien’s defense held up its end of the bargain in the tournament game with Harris-Lake Park. It was the Wolverine offense that was unable to generate enough points to prevent a 33-25 loss to the Wolves in a Class 1A Region 4 first round game played February 13 at Lake Park. With the loss, South O’Brien ends its season at 3-20. The winners improved to 18-4 on the season.

“I was proud of the way our girls played,” said Wolverine head coach DJ Hansen. “We fought hard. Defensively we played a great game. It’s pretty good effort to hold someone to 33 points. However, HLP’s pressure really bothered us. We got rattled and turned the ball over. When we did run good offense we just couldn’t get the ball in the hoop. It will be something we will need to address in the offseason.”
South O’Brien shot 24 percent (8-for-33) and committed 35 turnovers. The Wolverines were 5-of-16 from three-point range and 4-of-6 at the free throw line. Harris-Lake Park was limited to 19 percent shooting with 12 baskets in 62 attempts. The Wolves went 4-for-19 from deep and were 5-of-11 at the foul line.
Abby Woodall connected on a pair of treys and finished with a team-high 10 points. Abby Nelson added seven points, Reese Farquhar and Chloe Hustedt three points apiece and Lindsey Einck two points. Farquhar had four assists and Cassidy Horstmann two.
The Wolverines grabbed 38 rebounds to win the rebound battle by five. Farquhar came down with nine boards, Einck and Hustedt seven each and BreLee Rasmussen six. Rasmussen also rejected a pair of shots with Hustedt recording one block.
Nelson and Woodall each made two steals as Harris-Lake Park was guilty of 16 turnovers. The Wolves, who were led by Gracie Gunderson’s 11 points, came away with 19 steals.
This game was the last for Nelson, who is the Wolverines’ lone senior. “We had a great senior,” said Hansen. “She will be missed. Her improvement over the last two years was incredible. The intensity she brought was the catalyst to get the rest of the team going. She played fearlessly. I really wish we could have just one more year with her as she was starting to figure out things on the offensive end. She was our steals leader and assist leader on the team.
