South O’Brien struggled to score Tuesday February 3 at the Harris-Lake Park J/S High School. The host Wolves put on a show for the home crowd. South O’Brien struggled to find the basket much of the game inlcuding a long stretch beginning about halfway through the first period and extending to just after the start of the second half. The Wolverines took a 23-59 road loss.
Leading H-LP scorers were junior Cora Niemeier with 18 points all from outside. Senior Lilli Gunderson drilled 11 points followed by junior Gracie Gunderson contributing 9. Junior Peyton Reverts grabbed 7 rebounds with 3 from the scoring basket. L. Gunderson boarded 5 and 2 with 1 steal. Sophomore Ree Heikens pulled down 4 boards with 3 at home. She took 2 steals.
South O’Brien’s top 3 scorers are all seniors and put 5 points each on the board. Addison Hedberg, Lindsey Einck and Reese Farquhar. Farquhar took down 4 rebounds and a steal. Hedberg grabbed 3 misses altogether. Junior BreL:ee Rasmussen took possesion of 7 missed shots.
South O’Brien celebrated senior night against Gehlen Catholic
South O’Brien celebrated senior night on Friday February 6 against Gehlen Catholic, LeMars. The first half was a competitive competition. The halftime score gave the visiting Jays a 3-point lead, 24-21. The Jays came out on a mission in the second half. The Wolverines wer outscored in the 3rd quarter by 6-points. The final period of play showed Wolverine grit. The 12-point lead had closed to a 5-point defict by the final buzzer. The Wolverines took a 45-50 home loss.

South O’Brien Boys Basketball vs H-PL
The boys’ Wolverine basketball team made a statement at Harris-Lake Park on Tuesday February 3. They outscored H-LP on the first period 18-2. H-LP recovered some during the 2nd period. They were outscored by 4 points in the second period. Halftime score put the visiting Wolverines 34 – 13 over the host Wolves. South O’Brien returned to their scoring ways with a 10-point overscore against the H-LP Wolves. The final stanza was a low scoring affair. The game final was 62-29.
The Wolves’ junior Karter Evans socred 8 points with senior Tyler Wallace hitting 7 points and senior Coyer Robinson adding 5. Evans’ defensive play included 9 boards and a steal. Senior Seth Goodell boarded 6 and Robinson grabbed 6 with 2 offensive.
The Wolverines’ senior Jaden Kreber socred a nice 20 points. Senior Alex Griebel addd 12 points, all from downtown. Senior Brody Van Beek added 11 points. Senior Austin Negus demanded ball possession with 7 boards. Senior Gabe Moermond took down 6 boards, 2 of them offensive and a steal. Kreber also grabbed 6 boards with 3 offensive. He booked a blocked shot and 9 steals.
Boys Suffer Heartbreaker to Gehlen Catholic Jays
The Boys traveled to LeMars to face conference competitor Gehlen Catholic Jays. While halftime scores showed a 6-point lead for the host team, the Wolverines came out in the second half meaning business. They took the lead midway through the 3rd quarter. The Wolverines outscored the Jays in this period by 10, taking a 4-point lead going into the final quarter. The Jays were not having it. They played a hard final period. Early in the 4th the ays took the lead. Going into about the last 3 minutes of play the Wolverines knotted the score. Scoring remained flat for about another minutes with the Jays untieing the knot. The Wolverines in the last maybe 30 seconds took a basket lead but were overcome in the final seconds. The heartbreaking final is 37-38 in favor of the Gehlen Jays.

Emmetsburg was in Paullina for the Wolverines Senior Night
Emmetsburg was in Paullina for the Wolverines Senior Night on Saturday. The 70-59 Wolverine win was great for a South O’Brien home finale.
The hosts jumped out to a 20-14 lead in the fourth, just coming off a hard-fought disappointment. The added to that lead and took a break with a 36-25 lead. The E-Hawks paced the Wolverines’ 3rd period scoring at 18 each. And the guests also paced 4th quarter scoring with 16 each. The Wolverines enjoyed a 70-59 non-conference win.
