Strong start carries St. Mary’s past Wolverine girls

Remsen St. Mary’s recorded its best scoring quarter of the game in the first. The Hawks’ 20 points out of the gate led to a 62-33 War Eagle Conference victory over South O’Brien December 5 at Paullina.
“Overall, very pleased with our effort,” commented South O’Brien head coach DJ Hansen. “Our girls did a great job of playing with poise against the press and pressure Remsen brings. We knew it would be a monumental task taking them on, but I’m proud of how our girls went out and battled and competed and weren’t intimidated by Remsen.”
Marissa Ebel led the Wolverines in scoring with seven points. Reese Farquhar added six points. Jaylah Jackson supplied six points and eight rebounds. “Jaylah made a big impact coming off the bench, both offensively and defensively,” observed Hansen. Addison Hedberg, Lindsey Einck and Chloe Hustedt each tallied four points and Abby Nelson two. Hustedt also contributed three assists and three steals.
South O’Brien was 12-of-38 from the field for 38 percent. The host team was just 1-of-13 from long range and 8-of-15 at the free throw line. The Hawks shot 56 percent (24-of-43) and converted three treys in 12 attempts and 11 of 24 foul shots. The turnover totals showed 17 for St. Mary’s and 28 for the Wolverines.
“We had set up some goals for each quarter we wanted to achieve and in doing so it helped us stay focused on each possession,” noted Hansen “We were able to keep them under their scoring average, I believe, and felt pretty proud. We were able to hang up 33 points on them which is no easy task. Although we didn’t get the victory our girls got much, much better last night, and I saw a boost in their confidence. I thought our half court defense played really excellent. We did a great job limiting some of their weapons but there’s just too many. For them, Claire Schroeder (19 points) was a thorn in our side.”
