South O’Brien boys overcome winds and HMS golfers
On what was a very warm and incredibly windy night, the South O’Brien and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys golf teams battled it out in a close War Eagle Conference meet at the Primghar Golf Course on Thursday, April 13. The Wolverines won the match 202-209, but the Hawks did not walk away empty-handed. Medalist honors went to Jack Mastbergen of HMS, who shot a 48. He beat his teammate Charlie Conway by only one stroke. Conway was runner-up with a 49. South O’Brien sophomores Ryan Fuller and Derek Paulsen both shot 50 and tied for 3rd. After a handicap card playoff, Fuller took home the 3rd place medal and Paulsen took 4th. Scores were also tight for 5th, 6th, and 7th place. Juniors David Bottjen and seniors Dylan Strubbe and Branden Puhrmann all shot 51 for the Wolverines. Sophomore Carter Halverson placed 8th with a 52. Wolverine coach Kris Faust said, “When we have eight golfers card scores between 48 and 52, you know it’s been a competitive battle.”
Faust added, “The relentless winds (sometimes gusting to 50 mph) made play a challenge tonight, but I am proud of the guys for keeping their heads down and grinding out a win.”
