Wolverines fall to HMS in three
A busy week for the South O’Brien volleyball team began with a road match against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. Although the Wolverines improved after a rocky start, they were unable to avoid a sweep as HMS won the War Eagle Conference affair 25-10, 25-19 and 25-21 September 12 at Hartley. The visitors held a number leads in set three including 21-19 but couldn’t close the deal.
“Last night didn’t turn out as we expected,” said South O’Brien head coach Cortney Roskamp. “We got caught watching the ball a lot and were pretty flat footed causing us to be slow to react or not move at all. We have some work to do. I was pleased that we seemed to clean-up a few errors each set, but when we had our chance in the third set to push ahead and take one from HMS, we made some mental errors. That’s something to address and overcome moving forward.”
Marissa Ebel led the Wolverines in both kills, with seven, and in digs, with nine. “Marissa had a steady night for us and was our most consistent and reliable to take care of the ball and put it away,” noted Roskamp.
Maddie Johnson added three kills and Brooklyn Edwards made seven digs. Whitney Einck recorded 16 set assists. Half of the team’s eight ace serves were courtesy of Johnson. Claire Wagner and Ebel were each 8-of-9 serving with one ace.
