Wolverines get the last word against George-Little Rock
South O’Brien snapped a 6-6 deadlock with five runs in the fifth inning to capture an 11-5 baseball victory over George-Little Rock May 24 at Swanson Sports Center in Paullina. The Mustangs had tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the inning. The game was called in the fifth due to the rainy weather.
The Wolverines took a 2-0 lead in the first inning but George-Little Rock responded with a four spot in the second. The home team picked up one run in the third and then took a 6-4 lead with three tallies in the fourth. The visitors from the Siouxland Conference knotted the game by scoring twice in the fifth.
The Wolverines picked up just four hits but George-Little Rock, in its first outing of the season, walked seven South O’Brien batters and committed seven errors.
Cole Tjossem was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Pete Bottjen was 1-for 2 and scored three runs. Brock Riedemann’s one hit was a double. Kester Grimm recorded an RBI. Boston Riedemann and Ben Woodall each scored a pair of runs. Dain Moermond, Trevor Fiddelke and David Bottjen scored one run apiece.
The aggressive Wolverines were successful on all 12 of their base-stealing attempts. Boston Riedemann notched five stolen bases, Tjossem and Pete Bottjen two each and Fiddelke, Woodall and David Bottjen one apiece.
Starting pitcher Moermond tossed 4-2/3 innings and yielded five runs on three hits. Just one of the runs was earned. He recorded eight strikeouts, five walks and a hit batter. Woodall faced three batters in the fifth, getting the last out. He picked up the win when the Wolverines went ahead in the bottom of the inning. Woodall allowed one earned run on two hits.
