Wolverine golfers come away with split against HLP
The South O’Brien Girls and Boys Golf Teams split with Harris-Lake Park at Primghar Golf Course on Monday, April 15 with the boys winning 191-196 and the girls falling 253-262. The teams took advantage of some summer-like weather, but the winds were relentless once again. The course was in great condition, so we played the ball down for the first time this season. It was a good challenge for the golfers. The boys are now 3-2 in War Eagle Conference duals, and the girls are 2-3.
HLP brought just four varsity girls to face South O’Brien’s four girls so all scores were needed to register team scores. Sophomore Lindsey Einck shot a 55 and took medalist honors for the fourth time this season. She currently leads the WEC in points earned in duals. Sophomore Chloe Hustedt took the fourth-place medal with a 62 after a handicap hole card playoff with HLP’s Addison Brueggeman. Freshman Raegan Plaage and junior Shayli Johnson, both new to the team, shot in the 70s and continue to have great attitudes. They have learned a lot about the game in the first few weeks of the season.
Team Scores: HLP 253, South O’Brien 262.
Medalist: Lindsey Einck (SO’) 55, Runner-up: Rylie Wittrock (HLP) 58, 3rd: Danika DeBoom (HLP) 61, 4th: Chloe Hustedt (SO’) 62.
Other SO’ scores: Raegan Plagge, 70, 7th; Shayli Johnson, 75, 8th.
The guys found a way to edge out HLP by five strokes, even though they carded a team score a few strokes above their average. SO’ took three of the four medals. Junior Derek Paulsen carded another 44 to earn medalist honors. Derek is playing some great golf despite the winds. Senior David Bottjen tied for second with a 46 but lost the medal to HLP’s Caden Vant Hul on a handicap hole card playoff. Sophomore Alex Griebel took the fourth-place medal with a 48. Alex is a serious golfer who will continue to play an important role on our team. Junior Carter Halverson contributed a 53 to help the Wolverines get the team win.
Junior Ryan Fuller shot a 48 and senior Trevor Fiddelke shot a 49 to lead the JV team tonight.
