South O’Brien made it two-in-a-row in the War Eagle Conference with a straight-sets win over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn October 7 at Paullina. Set scores were 25-17, 25-15 and 25-21. The victory allowed the Wolverines to improve to 4-5 in conference play.
“I thought it was a good performance by the varsity players,” remarked South O’Brien head coach Cortney Roskamp. “It seems like we are peaking at the right time of the season. My focus for the girls now after this game is to work on setting a pace and playing at a consistent level the whole game. They are responding well to that message.
Overall, it was a GREAT senior night performance!”
The Wolverines’ 40 kills included a team-high nine from middle hitter Maddie Johnson. The junior also served 11-of-12 with a pair of aces. “Maddie had a big role in the win as she led our offense and did some good things from behind the service line,” said Roskamp.
Kenna Bauer contributed eight kills with Lydia Hustedt adding seven, Grace Fuhrman six and Willa Sickelka five. Riley Draper supplemented her steady play at the setter position (31 assists) with five kills of her own. She also notched three aces on 12-of-13 serving. Sickelka was a lucky 13-of-13 serving with one ace. Abby Schreck dug up six HMS attacks with Bauer and Hustedt each recording five digs.
