The Wolverines started off fast but couldn’t hold off the visiting Westerners Friday night. The 29-28 win by Akron-Westfield still leaves the Wolverines second in the District but drops the record to 3-2 and 5-2 overall.
Parker Struve started off the game with a 60 yard touchdown on the first play. We did a really nice job getting a push by the offensive line and Parker hit the hole going full speed and ran by the rest of the Westerners. The extra point kick missed to the left but the Wolverines were up 6-0 with 11:48 to go in the first quarter.
An interception early in the second drive attempt by Akron-Westfield set up a second score by the Wolverines. Pete Bottjen stepped in front of a screen and was able to grab the football. This gave the Wolverines a 1st and 10 from the 18 yard line. Five plays later Parker Struve punched in a 6 yard run on a quick pitch. Pete Bottjen had a great block to set up the scoring play. Parker Struve also scored the 2 point conversion on the same play over our right tight end. The score moved to 14-0 with 2:41 to go in the first quarter.
Akron-Westfield wasn’t going to be denied and put together a 12 play drive for 63 yards. The visitors proved to be solid on fourth down all night converting 5 out of 5 fourth down attempts. They pushed across the goal line on a 4 yard run and kicked the extra point. This made the score 14-7 with 10:30 to go in the second quarter.
The Wolverines followed up with a 12 play drive of our own. This went 65 yards and culminated with Parker Struve scoring on a 1 yard run with 5:17 to go in the 2nd quarter. Brock Riedemann added the extra point kick and the score moved to 21-7.
Akron-Westfield continued to convert third and long and fourth down plays to put another 15 play drive together that went 69 yards. They scored with :38 seconds to go in the first half on a 3 yard run by the QB. The extra point kick failed and the score moved to 21-13 Wolverines.
The second half proved to be a lot of the same thing. After a defensive stop by the Wolverines, we were able to put together another 13 play drive for 89 yards. So with 4:41 to go in the third quarter, Jacob VanLith was able to sneak in the endzone. Brock Riedemann added the extra point kick and the Wolverines were up 28-13.
Akron-Westfield wasn’t going away. They managed another 12 play drive and punched in a touchdown with 11:29 to go in the fourth quarter. The 2 point conversion was good and the Wolverines were only up 28-21.
South O’Brien managed to put two more pretty good drives together in the fourth quarter. The first ended on a fumble and the second ended on a failed fourth down conversion. Both times we were able to move the ball effectively but just didn’t get the ball to the end zone.
The Westerners put together one more 12 play drive for 75 yards. The touchdown and 2 point conversion with 30 seconds to go in the game put the game out of reach for the Wolverines.
Parker Struve led all rushers with 34 carries for 252 yards and 3 touchdowns. The offensive line did a great job opening holes for him. Pete Bottjen led the Wolverines defensively with 9 tackles and an interception.
Next week the Wolverines travel to Hinton to finish up the regular season. We need to get back to the basics this week and work on blocking and tackling.
