Lila Kummerfeldt updated the city council on the status of the electronic message board located at the north end of the Main Street Boulevard at West 2nd Street. The sign stopped working in the summer. Ace Signs of Sioux City was contacted. Repair or replacement prices and discussions have provided little usable information.
In the last month, Kummerfeldt and Andrew Lichter, Commercial Club President spoke with an Ace Signs representative and getting from them specifications to replace the sign. The size and color choices gave a price range of $10,511.70 to $12,546.15. Roling Sings in Sioux Rapids was contacted. The responded immediately giving an quotes ranging from $13,101.00 to $15,715.00.
She also updated the council on the financial matters of the sign. There is $6058.00 on hand to fix or replace the sign itself. A long discussion took place about the sign’s history and ownership. Some locations were discussed with the consensus being that it is in the best place.
Kummerfeldt will take the issue back to the Friends of the Library board and report back to the council of “Friends” wants to continue under the current arrangement with the sign or if they prefer a different arrangement. Currently messages for the sign are placed with the library and the bill is paid there. The revenue goes half to “Friends” and half to the “sign account” from where the $38.00 per month phone bill is paid. Mayor Kay Gifford said the revenue was to be split with the library in exchange for taking the responsibility to conduct the operations.
Council will revisit the matter at their November meeting.
