The Wolverines traveled to Alta last Friday for a District matchup with the Alta-Aurelia Warriors. The Warriors were 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the district. The Wolverines were coming off a tough loss to HMS the week before.
The game started fast for the Warriors as the second play from scrimmage went 67 yards for a touchdown. It was a short pass and a missed tackle which led to the long run. It looked like we had a little jet lag from the bus ride.
The Wolverines responded with an 11 play, 76 yard drive. Parker Struve crossed the goal line on the first of four touchdowns on the night. Kaedon Louscher kicked the extra point and made the score 7-7 with 6:50 to go in the 1st quarter.
The next score for the Wolverines came with 10:46 to go in the 2nd quarter. The Wolverine defense was starting to figure out the Warriors passing game and the Wolverine offense was getting a great push up front from offensive line. Parker Struve scored the touchdown on a 4 yard run. The 3 yard run came up short for the extra point but the Wolverines were up 13-6.
Pete Bottjen came up big on the next defensive series with a quarterback sack and fumble recovery on the next series by the Warriors. Two plays later Jacob VanLith connected with Jake Wallin on a 19 yard pass play. It took two plays to convert the 2 point run as a holding penalty on the first play pushed the Wolverines back to the 13 yard line. The next play Parker Struve ran 13 yards for the conversion. With 9:16 to go in the 2nd quarter the Wolverines were up 21-7.
The Wolverines weren’t done yet. Hudson Oolmann grabbed an interception and gave the Wolverines the ball on the 50 yard line with 4:32 to go in the half. The Wolverines were able to put a drive together and Parker Struve scored with 40 seconds to go in the half. His 9 yard run came on the 9th play of the drive with 40 seconds to go in the half. Jacob VanLith threw a pass to Dain Moermond for the 2 point conversion to make the score 29-7.
The second half started with another 11 play drive of 70 yards by the Wolverines. The final play of the drive was a 17 yard run by Parker Struve with 8:25 to go in the 3rd quarter. Andrew Suarez kicked the extra point to make the score 36-7.
The Warriors were able to punch in one more score following a fumble by our JV offense. It came with 1:12 to go in the game. The extra point kick was good so the score became 36-14.
Parker Struve ran really well Friday. He had 37 rushes for 268 yards and 4 touchdowns. He started to run with some confidence and our offensive line really picked it up this week.
This week is Homecoming for the Wolverines. MMCRU comes to Paullina. We still need to find a little more consistency offensively, and defensively we need to continue to improve our tackling and pass defense.
