The South O’Brien Wolverines picked up their first loss of the year against the HMS Hawks September 10 at Paullina. The final score showed HMS up 26-0 and picking up their second District win of the season. The Wolverines dropped to 2-1 on the year and 0-1 in the District.
The game started favorably for the Wolverines as we took the opening drive and drove down to the 15 yard line with a first and 10 situation. A couple penalties forced the Wolverines to give up the ball on downs.
HMS’ first series resulted in the Wolverines stopping the visiting Hawks on downs and getting the ball back with great field position. The first down on the 22 yard line didn’t finish well for the Wolverines as a couple more penalties forced the Wolverines to give the ball up on downs.
HMS was able to drive it to midfield but after a great punt gave the Wolverines the ball inside the 5 yard line. That simple “flip of the field” made it difficult for the Wolverines to operate. The ensuing punt gave the Hawks good field position. The Hawks took full advantage and put up their first touchdown of the night on a 27 yard gain by the quarterback with 8:42 to go in the second quarter. It looked like we had him tackled in the backfield but he was able to slide off and sprint to the endzone. The 2-point conversion pass failed and the Hawks led 6-0.
The Wolverine offense stalled again in the second quarter and the Hawks were able to run in a 13-yarder to put them up 12-0. The 2-point conversion failed and the score remained with 4:46 to go in the 2nd quarter.
The second half started off well for the Wolverines. Jacob Van Lith kicked a pooch kick towards the Hawk front line and they bobbled it and the Wolverines were able to recover it. The Wolverines drove all the way down to the 26 yard line but ended up giving the ball up on downs. We were having difficulty creating some consistency offensively. Throw in a couple penalties and the Wolverine offense struggled most of the night.
The game was pretty back and forth until the end of the third quarter when HMS put a drive together and scored on a 2 yard run with 17 seconds to go. We had spent a lot of time on defense and the HMS Hawks were starting to wear the defense down.
HMS managed to run one in from 68 yards out with 10:47 to go in the 4th quarter. It was another play where it seemed we had made a tackle in the backfield but the runner pushed through the tackle and was able to get to the edge. The two point conversion failed and the Hawks were up to stay at 26-0.
Parker Struve led the Wolverines rushing with 24 carries for 73 yards. Eddie Millan had 7 carries for 42 yards. Defensively, Pete Bottjen led the defense with 7 tackles. Carter Wohlert also had a good night with 8 tackles.
Next week the Wolverines travel to Alta-Aurelia. The Warriors are 3-0 after coming from behind last week to beat Hinton. We will really need to clean up the offense and get things going right away.
