Akron-Westfield stages late comeback to stun Wolverine boys
Akron-Westfield rallied for three runs in each of the last two innings to overtake South O’Brien and win 6-5 July 5 at Akron.
The Wolverines had put four runs on the board in the first and held that 4-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth. The three Westerner runs in that inning cut the deficit to 4-3. South O’Brien added an insurance run in the seventh but three more runs for the home team in the bottom of the inning decided the issue.
Brock Riedemann went 1-for-2 at the plate and was also hit by a pitch. He drove in two of the Wolverine runs. Kester Grimm was 2-for-3 with a sacrifice hit and a run scored. Dain Moermond went 1-for-4. Micah Davis and Boston Riedemann each walked and scored a run. Runner Cole Tjossem also crossed the plate for South O’Brien as did Jett Keith. Pete Bottjen and Kaedon Louscher each had a sacrifice hit and each picked up an RBI.
Grimm got the start and went 5-1/3 innings. He allowed three earned runs on five hits while walking three batters, striking out two and hitting one. Moermond’s 2/3 of an inning yielded two earned runs on one hit and two walks. Keith took the loss. The run he allowed was earned. He surrendered two hits, walked a batter, hit a batter and struck out a batter. There was only one Wolverine error in the game.
